Carta’s partnering with INFLCR to help student athletes understand their financial opportunities and maximize their earning potential with the Equity 101 course.

Last month, we launched Equity 101—a free course to break down the basics of equity compensation. Our goal was to help everyone better understand and navigate the benefits of having an ownership stake in a company. Today, we’re announcing a partnership with INFLCR to help more than 75,000 student athletes across the country understand equity and maximize their earning potential with name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. INFLCR will embed and distribute the course on its app.

INFLCR is the leading athlete brand-building and NIL business management app for elite athletic organizations. As NIL deals evolve and increase in popularity, they present a massive financial opportunity for collegiate athletes. But many of them face challenges navigating such deals—often because they don’t understand the terms or know where to find more information.

As INFLCR founder Jim Cavale said, “NIL deals are complex. It can be difficult to build a business without help—from understanding tax forms and regulations or what it takes to be an entrepreneur for the first time.”

It’s critical that student athletes understand how to maximize and navigate their contracts, especially when they involve equity. We created Equity 101 because we saw a clear gap in equity education across industries and levels. People can’t manage something they don’t understand, and this course is an important first step to support these athletes.

According to Carta data, the fair market value of unexercised options that expired in 2021 was $580M. Less than half of equity owners report receiving education on their equity compensation. One in three see minimal value in their equity awards.

Equity 101 is a set of 10 interactive lessons that break down concepts and terms—from offer to grant to exercising options and beyond—so anyone can feel confident understanding and navigating their equity options. It’s now available to all student-athletes on INFLCR.
