Tribe Capital Management, Inc., a venture capital firm headquartered in Menlo Park, California, has multiple funds with over a 100 SPVs, focused on AI and data science companies representing more than $2 billion AUM.
Controller Stuart Johnson manages multiple transactions and investor requests quarterly. He relies on Carta’s Fund ERP and the Carta Plugins for Claude to help meet Tribe’s operational demands, especially at quarterly closes.
And, as Carta introduces new ways to leverage AI, Tribe Capital is developing capabilities it can’t with other solution providers.
Carta provides Tribe with essential operational support
In a typical month, Tribe Capital processes roughly 20 transactions, which can also include exits and new SPV onboarding.
He gets it all done by working closely with Carta’s fund administration team and other specialists. Carta acts as a direct extension of Tribe’s internal operations.
“At Tribe, we are constantly in touch with Carta, going through workflows and addressing transactional demands,” says Stuart. “We send our needs to the team, they confirm they've received it, action it for us, and send it back to us with real-time information. If something can’t be worked out asynchronously, we have a weekly call where we get it executed.”
Carta’s Investors Plugin cuts a week of reconciliation down to one day
Carta’s AI growth lets Tribe perform key tasks faster and with less stress. Before the Carta Plugin for Claude, Stuart grappled with reconciliation and reporting, manually translating data from Carta to conform with investor requests for custom reports.
“Carta is our system of record and the end-all, be-all for data accuracy at Tribe, but I often receive requests for different report formats. I was constantly reconciling data, which can be tedious, but the Carta Plugin for Claude enables faster collaboration between Tribe and Carta’s fund administration team,” says Stuart. “The AI cut the time we spent on a complicated process from one week to one day. Doing this quarterly across four funds and a hundred SPVs is a big thing for us.”
AI-driven data aggregation spurs productivity and optimism
Carta’s Investors Plugin increases Stuart’s responsiveness across all stakeholders. He uses the plugin to answer multiple questions at once, pulling aggregated data from any of Tribe’s funds and portfolio companies with single prompts. Eliminating manual navigation has been a “tremendous time-saver” for him.
He appreciates that only Carta provides this level of capabilities. He recently looked at another fund administration solution, and it lacked the visibility and integration of Carta, which he considers more powerful and intuitive.
Stuart also feels optimistic about future capabilities, because he noted recent quarters have kept getting easier due to Carta’s continual, AI-driven innovation.
“My initial reaction was ‘Wow, I can't believe this is finally here.’ The Carta Plugin for Claude is everything you've ever wanted in terms of reducing rigorous efforts without sacrificing accuracy or spending time on rework,” says Stuart. “It makes everyone at Tribe happy to have the data we need in real time all the time.”
