In case some hard data is helpful — how do early-stage startups handle finance?
In the vast majority of cases, it falls on the founder! Along with a hundred other responsibilities.
Only 5% of companies worth between $1M and $10M have a dedicated Finance team member, according to recent Carta data. That percentage jump all the way to...6.5% by the time the company is worth $25M.
The CFO is a crucial part of the startup lifecycle. They just don't factor much into the earliest days of the company journey.
Of course a number of startups turn to consultants, fractional leaders, and a host of other methods for their finance / accounting needs until the business starts to scale.
Just my data-driven two cents on some comments flying around this week ❤️
