Founders - don't worry. Your peers in every other startup industry are struggling to get to Series A too.
From SaaS, to fintech, to consumer, to biotech — startups in every sector are seeing graduation rates to Series A decline.

Chart below shows the percent of companies that made it to Series A from Seed in 2 years or less. The year indicates the year in which the seed round was raised.
For Example: 41.5% of fintech companies that raised their seed rounds in 2020 made it to Series A in under 2 years.

Every sector shows the same pattern. Regular-to-high grad rates in 2018, boosted graduation rates in 2020, declining graduation rates since 2021.
Wait I thought the boom time 𝘄𝗮𝘀 2021? Yes. But remember the years indicated when the 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘥 round was raised. So companies that raised seed in 2021 were trying to raise A in 2022 and 2023...and that was really tough.
The peak graduation rates were pretty silly. There isn't a real world in which 40% of companies should graduate from one venture stage to another in 24 months, much of that was misplace hype.
The grad rates for the 2023 seed cohort (only includes the first quarter or two given the timeframe) are likely to get marginally better.
Early indications for seed rounds raised in 2024 are more rosy. We won't see 2020-level grad rates but hopefully something more normal.
Distinctions between sectors, while fairly minor, do matter. Sector that held up best has been...Hardware! Kinda cool. Does that suggest that raising a seed in Hardware has always been more difficult? Or something about the space remaining more grounded than most in the hype-era?
Could some of the low graduation rate for more software-denominated industries like SaaS and Fintech be due to seed-strapping companies who don't want to raise Series A? Ya, partly. I don't think it's a major part of the explanation, but it's an ingredient for sure.
Misery loves company, as they say...but truthfully this is a reflection of just how tough the founder journey through venture can be. Shout out to the founders as always 🙏
