How much does industry matter in seed-stage startup fundraising?

Quite a bit!

Friday Q&A follows on from last week - more industry maps, but this time for the seed-stage.

How to read the chart:

  • y-axis is the median pre-money valuation

  • x-axis is the median amount raised per company in a given industry

  • bubble size is how many rounds in the dataset

Data comes only from Q4 2022. And yes, I know that climate tech and AI companies are missing from the map - working on it right now!

Note that this data comes from US startups only and is skewed towards those in CA and NY.

FINDINGS:

  • Gaming companies had the highest median valuations

  • Energy companies (though few) had the highest median cash raised

  • Industries clustered around $3M raised and $14M valuation.
