Startups of the future - how many people should you have in your founding team?
The number of founders in a given business seems like a very personal decision. But when we look at the data, we actually find clear patterns across Carta startups by industry.
If you're interested in getting more detail about startup team composition at the earliest stages, tune into our weekly data newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gNa_Dk-F

Biotech
Medical Devices
Hardware
Telecom
Over 45% of founding teams in these industries are 3+ founders (and in biotech, 4 and 5 founder teams are not uncommon). We've got no data on why exactly this is the case, but these industries are all highly regulated which may add burden to a young company. They are all also dealing with atoms rather than bits (congrats to all you founders playing on hard mode!)

Edtech
ERP
Consumer
These sectors have unusually high percentages of solo founders (over 30% of companies in all 3).
Overall, the most common founding team across startups is still the 2 founder version. But don't be boxed into that norm if you can assemble an all-star group.
