So I’ve been spending an inordinate amount of time in our compensation datasets. One interesting stratification I'm seeing is how different startup industries approach team building.
Everyone gets it, engineers are usually pretty important to tech startups. But how about the other functions? When should companies invest heavily in sales, for instance?
Turns out, that answer is highly industry dependent. Adtech startups make sales nearly 20% of headcount and payroll from very early days, whereas sales is a bit of an afterthought for early-stage biotech.
If you had access to compensation information for hundreds of thousands of startup employees - what would you ask?
