LinkedIn: Startup Valuations by Industry From 2021 Boom to 2023

Startup valuations since Q1 2021 in 4 major industries. Who is holding up best?

Yesterday we looked at how late-stage venture is declining much more quickly than early-stage. Today we split those earlier rounds by 4 industries: SaaS, Consumer, Fintech, and Healthtech.

Notes on this data before jumping in - all of it comes from Carta cap table companies (35,000+ of them now). The graphics only include U.S. startups and comes from a robust 7,000+ rounds.

We only plotted valuation changes, but know that round volume changes are also occurring (fewer rounds are happening in each successive quarter).

Percentage change refers to the difference in the median pre-money valuation by quarter compared with Q1 2021.

𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱

  • Healthtech is the...healthiest here, at 57% above Q1 2021 levels.

  • SaaS and Consumer both above the starting point

  • Fintech falling fastest

𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗔

  • Healthtech leads again!

  • Down between 15% and 17% in Consumer and Fintech

  • SaaS basically flat

𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗕

  • SaaS is lowest here (down 35%)

  • Fintech basically flat (after some serious spike in prior quarters)

Dynamics are clearly different by industry - but it does seem that Fintech is getting roughed up more in the earliest stages and Healthtech valuations are relatively more bouyant.
