If you were going to give venture-backed startups a letter grade for 2024 - what would it be?

For me it feels like a B. Maybe a B- if I'm feeling ungenerous.

Late 2022 to early 2023 was a solid D as interest rate changes, incipient international conflicts, and dawning recognition of severe overvaluations lead to headaches across the board.

2021 felt like an A (but now we know that was a sugar rush from bad champagne rather than a true, sustainable summit).

So all things considered, I'll take a B. Especially since the vibe seems to be looking up for 2025.

Of course you don't need to take my word for it. You can read our State of Startups 2024 and explore 100+ slides of data and insights that touch founders, investors, employees, and LPs.
