LinkedIn: 1168 Startups Raised Seed in 2017 Where Are They Now

1,168 startups using Carta raised a seed round in 2017. Where are they now?

We've all heard that stats around the difficulty of building a startup. 9 in 10 startups fail! Or maybe it's 7 out of 10. Or something.

In truth, judging failure rates is a difficult exercise. You have to account for the time period, the macroeconomic conditions, lots of stuff.

Instead of trying to come up with a specific failure rate, I looked at how startups that raised a seed round in 2017 are doing as of the end of last year (5-6 year period, depending on when the raise happened).

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝘁?

  • 45% of seed startups in 2017 have not raised another round.

  • 17% of 2017 seed startups have gotten to their Series B round.

  • 2% to Series D so far.

Of the initial pool, we've seen 1 IPO 🚀

12% of the initial pool has gotten acquired.

How many have failed? Really hard to say. But stepping through the alphabet funding rounds is no joke.

Here's to founders for trying!
