2023 kinda sucked for VC investment into startups. So which sectors have done better so far in 2024?
Dollars below are for primary rounds only, no bridges/extensions. This gives us a better sense of where VCs are freshly excited rather than propping up current portcos.
Includes all rounds, from seed through Series F. Comparison is for Q1-Q3 investment in 2023 vs the same time period in 2024.
Overall, primary rounds investment is up about 19% from 2023 across all sectors.
𝗗𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰
Hardware: total investment up 85%
SaaS: up 67%
Adtech: up 53%
Medical Devices: up 37%
𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯
Healthtech: up 2%
Fintech: down 2%
𝗗𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰
Education: down 31%
Gaming: down 39%
Consumer: down 44%
Energy: down 45% (driven by a lack or 1-3 major late-stage rounds)
AI exists in every one of these sectors but if you broke it out it would have seen a solid increase (probably 20%-30%).
Optimistic for continued improvement in 2025 🙏
