LinkedIn: Where Have All the Angel Investors Gone in 2023

2023 - where have all the angel (investors) gone?

In 2021, there was a monthly average of 1,212 angel investors who made at least one investment into pre-seed companies.

Definition here is: any individual who wrote a check for between $1 and $25K into a company that had not raised any priced equity.

2022: down a bit (1,097 average) but still over 1,000 angels per month.

2023 (so far): down about 1/3rd to 731 angelic people.

A few thoughts on why:

  • Angels are likely feeling the crunch of the tech downturn as well and may be less excited about parting with an additional dollar.

  • There was a major influx of angels from 2020 to 2021 - many of them probably only made one or two investments before pausing.

  • More difficult to justify super early investments with interest rates at today's levels!

Early founders, just a heads up that finding the right angels may be more difficult than before. But hey, still better than 2019 right?
