A deeply personal reflection on a difficult week for Carta—acknowledging mistakes publicly while expressing gratitude for the founders who continue to trust...

LinkedIn: Carta Made Serious Mistakes and I'm Deeply Sorry

Well, this weekend sucked.

I really love this work, so it’s been a wrenching experience to watch us make very public mistakes.

I’m sorry we messed up.

I know Carta is full of people who, as Karri generously notes below, genuinely care about helping founders. It will take time and effort to rebuild trust and we’ll have to earn it back.

I'm grateful every day for the founders I get to work with and for many of you who reached out over the past few days - it's deeply appreciated.

On a personal note, my work is about sharing insights - building trust through data. The data I use is always aggregated and anonymized in order to maintain privacy while also helping the ecosystem become more transparent. That privacy charge is one I take very seriously and I’m always open to feedback should you have any.

--Update--

As of this evening, we are exiting the secondary liquidity business.

from Henry, our CEO:

"We won’t do anything that threatens the trust of our founders. And so we will exit the secondary trading business to eliminate any concern that we are not acting in our founders’ best interests. We will focus on what we do best, which is cap table and fund administration software. There are many many talented people working on the private market liquidity problem. We will enthusiastically cheer for them from the sidelines. It is an important problem. I hope someone solves it." Full link in comments.

Saddened by this, as I believe secondary liquidity matters deeply as companies stay private for a dozen year or longer. But I'm glad we're keeping our northstar of putting founders first.
