What you'll need before heading to Carta dot com / friend:

• Job area (eg Marketing, Sales, etc)

• Job level (entry through VP)

• Location (if remote, choose the nearest city)

• Company valuation (just a ballpark, starts at $50M)

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹

• Startups tend not to have a fully-formed job ladder (they may only have 5 levels in the company, for instance). This will affect the internal bands they use to evaluate candidate comp.

• I think the range is as important as the median value here (25th / 50th / 75th percentiles).

• If you get a job offer and the equity is only expressed as a number of shares, that 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. Ask for your percentage of company ownership.

• This covers salary and equity, but of course total comp includes more than that! Bonuses, benefits, perks - these all play a role.

• The page restricts job data to one role per day, so be strategic if you're headed into a comp conversation that morning.
