LinkedIn: Startups Raised 65 Percent Less in H1 2023 vs H1 2022

Everyone knows it was tough out in startupland for the first 6 months of the year.

But I think it's still underrated just how fast things have changed.

Took a look at the total invested capital across all Carta startups for H1 2022 vs H1 2023. Overall, startups raised 65% less through the first half of this year than they did in the first half of last year.

But not all startups have been hit with the same declines.

Edtech was essentially flat YoY. Now that's on a pretty small total investment amount (just $1 billion) but cool to see.

Energy also held up decently, as did Medical Device investment.

The laggards:

  • Gaming fell 81% from H1 to H1

  • Fintech dropped the furthest, seeing 85% less investment

  • B2B SaaS was also quite low (73% drop)

I think the bottom for US startups was Q1 of 2023 and we're headed back up. But no denying it's been rough out there. Hug a founder if you can.
