Decided to commit to LinkedIn content 1 year ago today. What happened?
A lot more than I was expecting.
New connections. Journalist inquiries. Podcast invitations. Content downloads. Speaking engagements. Founder introductions. VC conversations. On and on.
And, to be clear, we had been producing insights and analysis on startups for months before truly committing to this channel as the right starting point. All the same great work, but no one was discovering it before this LI push.
A few lessons learned:
Expect to be shouting into the void for awhile. It's okay! Lots of posts flop. Use the time to experiment with different formats and tones.
Stay in the flow of current conversation. What are the people you'd like to reach discussing in the comments of other posts? How can you add your POV to those conversations as they happen?
Virality is completely unpredictable, so consistency over everything.
Consistency does not mean post 7x a week. 3 well-crafted posts with some depth will typically outperform 7 half-formed thoughts. Let the posts that do well ride for a few days.
The algorithm will change on you and whatever was working before may no longer perform. Great time to pivot by adjusting length, image, format, post timing, etc.
Use data 😇 lots of content here sticks to personal perspective, which is great, but getting your hands on some well-visualized data can help you stand out.
