Miami ranks in the top 10 for early-stage funding but its young ecosystem means companies aren't old enough yet to generate the massive late-stage rounds.

LinkedIn: Miami Startups Are Crushing Early Stage but Lag Late Stage

Miami startups: crushing it or way behind?

¿Por qué no los dos?

Here's the thing: Miami as a real place for startups is super young. Like less than a decade old, really.

So ranking in the top 10 for early-stage funding stages is a great accomplishment.

But the companies born in Miami are just not old enough to be raising the massive, late-stage rounds necessary to play at the top of the rankings for Series B, C, and beyond.

And of course the money in late stage rounds is often many times larger than the capital invested at early stage. Meaning if you simply rank the ecosystems by total capital invested across all stages, Miami will lag by definition.

If you want to track change in venture, you need to disaggregate by stage. This goes for tracking geo progress like Miami's or demographic shifts like percent of capital raised by women founders.

Hope this helps in your next debate about whether Miami is a startup city 🙏
