OpenAI just released a great dataset on how people are using ChatGPT — and then wrapped the findings up in some god-awful graphs.
Couldn't take it, had to re-chart.
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀
The biggest single conversation category of the 20+ OAI tracked was "Specific Info". Lots of folks using ChatGPT in place of Google search it seems.
Biggest topic area (covering multiple categories) was Practical Guidance. Users want instruction on specific tasks, advice on creative ideas, and health tips.
Clear that writing and everything associated with writing (editing, translating, summarizing, etc) is still a massive reason to turn to ChatGPT. Nearly 30% of queries were writing related.
Would have expected technical help to be a bigger proportion, although maybe it's quite narrowly defined.
Also candidly shocked that "relationships" and the "games" lines comprise ~2% combined. Lots of media swirl around AI girlfriends but maybe that's not happening on this platform specifically.
Fascinating, now that we can read what's happening.
If you're summarizing major findings in a chart, make them readable! Don't use stacked bars of different sizes with sub-segments 😁
