Raising Series A funding for your startup? Our data can help.

Chart below looks at 657 Series A fundraises on Carta from the first half of 2023 (US companies). Each industry is a bubble - the bigger the bubble, the more companies raised rounds.

X-Axis: median pre-money valuation for that industry Y-Axis: median cash raised per round

Taking a step back, the median Series A on Carta so far this year raised $7 million on a $40 million pre-money valuation. Pretty decent figures!

However, if you go back to the first half of 2022, the comparable figures are:

  • $11 million raised per round on $48 million pre-money.

  • 1,127 rounds raised (71% higher than this year)

Salute to the founders out there, this market is rough even if valuations are relatively robust.

Key takeaways from Series A:

1. Strong focus on Health - solid round numbers for Biotech, Healthtech, and Medical Devices.

2. Encouraged to see both a decent round volume and robust valuation/cash metrics for Renewable Energy. That sector has held up well over the past year or so.

3. 8 Semiconductor rounds? That's pretty exciting!

If this chart sparks joy, head over to Carta dot com and read our full State of Private Markets report for the second quarter (available freely on our blog).

This is the last Series map we'll create for awhile, but lots more data coming shortly so you can get ahead while everyone else takes vacation 🙏
