How will tariffs and the new shape of trade impact investment into startups?

...honestly asking because I don't have a good prediction.

Last year was a pretty positive one for startup sectors building physical goods like Hardware, Medical Devices, and Biotech. Hardware in particular saw a 65% rise in invested capital from 2023.

Does that get a boost from increased focus on American manufacturing? Does it take a hit because supply chains are going to be much more expensive to create and maintain?

So many questions, such as:

  • Do investors pour even more capital into AI startups or does this impact the AI story at all?

  • Does the market swoon impact IPO decisions, thereby delaying capital recycling for many VC funds?

  • Do funds with a software thesis try to fund more "real-world" startups?

  • Do cross-border digital goods get caught up in trade wars as well?

  • Do tariffs change interest rates (which are a giant input into startup capital availability?

Probably not useful for early founders to get swept up in too much predicting since the environment is changing so rapidly. But startups are not a separate economy. All the public market and geopolitical turmoil will have an effect (or many different effects, more likely).

Really tricky times.
