Where did U.S. startups fundraise in Q1?

As usual, if you answered California, you won this trivia.

Note that all data graphics this week will be drawn from our upcoming State of Private Markets Q1 report.

It's packed with great details on startup fundraising, valuations, employee movement, deal terms - and it could arrive in your inbox on Tuesday morning. Just sign up in the first comment!

Okay, other key findings from this geo analysis (data is invested capital from seed thru Series F):

  • California's 40% share of invested capital is higher than the rate over the past few quarters

  • MA pulled basically even with NY in VC investment in Q1 - pretty rare to see that happen

  • The South continues to steadily gain share (18% this quarter, up from 16% last quarter)

  • 13 states saw no investment dollars this quarter into Carta companies (that's the highest such number since 2018)

Venture still centers around Silicon Valley - but as MA shows, building venture ecosystems, especially around particular industries, is possible!
