Love the smell of freshly baked data in the morning.

Read the new Carta's State of Private Markets: Q4 and FY 2023 report here.

A few teaser highlights to whet the appetite:

Total rounds and capital saw no major upticks in Q4. December was the best month of the quarter, however, with some momentum into this year.

19.6% of rounds in Q4 were down rounds, continuing the high down round trend from prior quarters.

Nearly 50% of every VC dollar was invested into a startup in the West region (but that's declined from over 60% just 4 years ago).

The number of employees laid off from startups hit its lowest point since mid-2022 in December, a hopeful sign - but new hires have yet to take off.

And new for this audience - an Excel offer! If you'd like the data in this report in Excel form, please respond to this email and let me know. You can build your own charts with it, use the data in your own meetings, or print out the tables and frame them - it's up to you.
